The Ghana Water Company Limited in the Ashanti Region has expressed concern over the effects of continuous environmental degradation on its Barekese Water Treatment Plant.
Speaking at a tree-planting exercise, Hanson Mensah-Akutteh said that more than 50% of the plant’s catchment area has been degraded due to illegal logging, farming, sand winning, and settlement expansion.
However, Hanson Mensah-Akutteh said that GWCL had begun restoring the area by planting 5,000 trees to protect the Barekese Dam, a key source of water supply for Kumasi and surrounding communities.
