The government of Ghana has handed Ghanaian citizenship to over 100 africa citizen at a ceremony held accra.
The new citizens were administered the Oath of Allegiance on Monday, March 9, 2026, in line with Ghana’s broader initiative to deepen historical, cultural, and economic ties with members of the diaspora.
Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, in her remarks at the event, described the ceremony as a symbol of reconnection, healing, and restoration for Africans displaced centuries ago.

She indicated that the Mahama administration is championing global efforts at the United Nations to have the Transatlantic Slave Trade formally recognised as one of the gravest crimes against humanity.
The Vice President cited historical landmarks including Cape Coast Castle and Elmina Castle, which once functioned as holding canters for millions of Africans who were taken from the continent and transported across the Middle Passage to the Americas and the Caribbean.

She noted that while the descendants of those who survived the Middle Passage have displayed resilience, innovation, and cultural vibrancy over the years, it remains essential to acknowledge the painful past that defined their experience.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang noted that the descendants of those who endured the Middle Passage continue to be connected as “branches of the same ancestral tree,” sharing an enduring history and a future they must restore together.
She further highlighted Ghana’s enduring ties with the diaspora, noting that the relationship dates back to the vision of the country’s first president, Kwame Nkrumah. She explained that Ghana’s independence in 1957 was meant not only for the benefit of the nation but also to promote freedom and opportunity for Africans and people of African descent across the world.
