Government covers medical costs as Mpox cases reach 1,038 with 8 deaths

The minister of health honorable Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has disclose in in parliament that 1,038 cases of Mpox disease have been recorded, with 8 deaths as of March 3, 2026.

According to him, Mpox has spread to 124 districts nationwide, with Greater Accra and the Western Regions emerging as the hardest hit since the outbreak started in May 2025.

He noted that the Ministry of Health, together with the Ghana Health Service and development partners, has rolled out a coordinated multi-sectoral approach to stop the spread of the disease and protect public health.

He indicated that the response is being executed through enhanced coordination and emergency operations, increased surveillance and contact tracing with a 21-day follow-up, ongoing testing at national reference laboratories, improved case management, and strengthened infection prevention and control practices.

The Minister disclosed that 31,231 people have been vaccinated across 12 districts in the Ashanti, Greater Accra and Western Regions, achieving more than 95% coverage of the target population.

The Health Minister also announced that the medical bills of Mpox patients are being borne by the government.
